The successful candidate will be responsible for the development, administration, and instruction of MGMT*1100: Business Career Preparation, a required course designed to build students’ career readiness, professionalism, and job search competencies. In addition, the Instructor and Career Advisor will engage in the full range of professional activities related to career advising for Lang students and alumni, including career development, further education planning, job search strategies and developing professional self-marketing materials.  The Instructor and Career Advisor plays a central role in delivering and advancing career education within the Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics.

The role integrates career education into the Bachelor of Commerce (B.Comm) curriculum and develops targeted programming for diverse student populations, including international students and those facing barriers to employment. The Instructor and Career Advisor also serves as a key collaborator across campus, working with faculty, academic units, and student services to embed career development into curricular and co-curricular experiences.

 

Specific responsibilities include:

 

  • Continual development and delivery of MGMT*1100, including curriculum design, online administration of asynchronous course material, and delivery of in-class workshops/engagement activities.
  • Oversee grading for 400+ students per semester and manage the recruitment, training and supervision of 5 Undergraduate Teaching Assistants each term.
  • Advise undergraduate, master's, PhD students and alumni on career coaching/development, further education planning, professional business designations/certifications, job search strategy, and the development of professional and competitive application materials through 1:1, group and drop-in appointments.
  • Develop an in-depth understanding of the curriculum in the School (courses, syllabi, faculty and course offerings) to strategically determine curricular and co-curricular programming.
  • Develop career development curricula in conjunction with faculty, student group representatives, and employer partners to be facilitated within and outside the classroom to enhance the academic, personal and career development of undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Utilize adult education principles in designing and facilitating workshops and seminars for clubs, student governments and other student leaders within the School regarding the knowledge and skill development obtained from extra-curricular experiences and the relation to future career goals.

 

Other duties include:

 

  • Act as a liaison between other departments, delivering career education, including the Experiential Learning Hub and Lang Grad Studies.
  • Research and develop career development resources and programming delivered to prospective students and parents, including career information for recruitment events.  
  • Attend and provide program-specific career development support to students during career/job fairs, panel and networking events as well as student club initiatives.
  • Engage with external partners to keep abreast of labour market information and perceived gaps, and future trends in various sectors.
  • Take on a management role in the absence of the department Manager.

 

Requirements of the position include:

 

  • Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in business or a related discipline plus a minimum of 3-4 years of career advising experience, preferably at a post-secondary institution.
  • Completion of a Career Development Practitioner Certification is preferred.
  • Proven ability to develop curriculum and the use of instructional design skills are required.
  • Career advising skills to effectively assess student needs, career outcomes and goals. Including a solid background in job search strategies, resume writing and interview skill preparation.
  • Excellent communication skills, both in listening and relaying information.
  • Highly developed presentation and group facilitation skills, with the ability to establish rapport with students, employers, faculty and staff.
  • Knowledge of current educational, employment opportunities and labour market trends relevant to undergraduate and graduate business students, including professional business-specific designations/certifications.
  • Ability to independently solve problems with minimal supervision under tight time constraints.
  • Experience administering course delivery using Brightspace (D2L) as well as familiarity with virtual meeting platforms, strong computer skills, including advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office products, is essential.
  • An understanding of Lang academic programs, university policies and procedures, and administration systems is considered an asset.
  • Ability to communicate with tact and diplomacy.

The target hiring salary for this position is minimum and up to 96% of midpoint for the salary grade.
