General Purpose
The Materials Handler performs all duties related to the receipt, documentation, and delivery of goods within the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC), Health Sciences Centre (HSC). This is a physically demanding position.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Recieves and sorts incoming shipment of goods to departments within the OVC HSC.
- Inspects packages for exterior damage, notes moderate damage on way bill, or refuses shipment that is severely damaged and notifies department and Purchasing.
- Records and maintains daily log of incoming and outbound shipments, records carrier's name, number of pieces, and waybill number and recipient's name.
- Verifies quantity and description against way bills, bills of lading, packing slips etc. Communicates discrepancies to Purchasing.
- Checks to see if appropriate paper work has accompanied shipment i.e. Transportation of Dangerous Goods certificate, chain of signature for narcotics and bill of lading, packing slips.
- Exercises care when removing packing crates and transporting pieces of large equipment as directed by the supervisor.
- Coordinates pick up or delivers goods to departments and obtains signatures for receipt of goods.
- Tracks and reroutes goods with incorrect addressing.
- Picks up shipments from other campus loading docks that have been delivered to wrong location.
- Performs all shipping functions related to the addressing, packaging and mailing/couriering of articles belonging to clients that have been left behind in the HSC.
- Maintains an electronic log for all out bound shipments and equipment repairs from the OVC HSC shipping dock.
- Packages equipment and processes paperwork to have equipment shipped out for repair.
- Packages and processes clipper blades for re sharpening.
- Matches packing slip with open purchase order, receives into inventory via inventory software to generate stock list, and stocks items in correct bin location in distribution centre.
- Stocks shelves and racks in bulk storage, pet food storage, central dispatch, supply annex and document storage daily or as needed.
- Participates in physical counts and expiry checks of inventory items in all storage areas.
- Rotates stock; notify Purchasing of any items that have expired or are near expiry to determine next steps.
- Informs if packing slips are missing so they can obtain a copy from the vendor.
- Informs immediately of any back orders that occur and informs Purchasing.
- Picks requisitioned stock to be distributed to all service areas and Omnicells.
- Manufactures cleaning products or other inventory assembly items when needed.
- Restocking and delivery of goods to assigned clinical areas of OVC HSC. Provides recommendation for adjustments to min/max of stock items to Purchasing.
- Records and processes meter readings for bulk oxygen tank.
- Arranges pick up to dispose of decommissioned equipment after the "Equipment Decontamination and Decommissioning Report" has been submitted with appropriate signatures on the document.
- Completes labs runs for the HSC when needed.
- Provides support to Operations for logistical activities when required.
- Distributes and replenishes water coolers throughout the HSC as scheduled and requested.
- Places work orders and track completion of facility work orders that are identified during their daily functions.
- Performs general clean-up of central dispatch, bulk storage, shipping dock, and document storage to include dry moping or sweeping of floors and garbage removal.
- Stocks, maintains supplies so staff can place Hazardous Waste in the Bio-Hazard Shed.
- Answer telephone inquiries.
- Fills out and completes all necessary and related paper work pertaining to daily responsibilities.
- Operates within established safety practices as per the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Requirements
- Minimum Grade 12 education; communication and mathematical skills.
- Knowledge of Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations.
- Some previous experience in a materials handling/shipping/receiving environment where handling dangerous or perishable goods was required.
- Experience with data entry (inventory software), data search, word processing and spreadsheets.
- Interpersonal skills: courteous, professional, tactful, diplomatic and respectful.
