General Purpose
Under the supervision of the Manager, Mechanical Design, the incumbent is responsible for the design of solutions for work orders under $10k and for larger projects typically up to $1 Million from client communication, site review/ assessment through all phases of the project including contract administration, coordination, and commissioning.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Evaluate the current conditions of project sites
- Identify hazardous materials and practices
- Interview client, end users, and stakeholders to establish scope and restrictions
- Investigate construction materials, new technologies, product types and applicable companies to implement solutions
- Provide technical assistance and guidance to the University community
- Provide critical support and direction to Maintenance and Energy Services
- Perform condition audits and make recommendations related to various building systems and equipment
- Prepare project implementation estimates inclusive of all hard and soft costs
- Stay current and provide best estimates with changing trends in construction/create energy models for better decision making and design selection
- Establish detailed quantity take-offs, unit pricing, labour needs, contingency implementation methods, and schedule restrictions
- Communicate to client estimate details and educate as required on Class based on phase of design)
- Monitor and update budgets as projects progress
- Prepare and monitor schedule for project activities
- Work with client group and stakeholders to identify project and construction schedule and progress
- Implement schedule and communicate any deviations to schedule to Identify risks associated with schedule and budget
- Apply corrective measures for deviations as required
- Conduct procurement process including production of all applicable documentation, lead contractor site reviews, issue addendums, evaluation of submissions, and recommend contract award.
- Review and approve contractor submittals including shop drawings, site mock-ups, and construction schedule.
- Conduct site visits on a regular basis to confirm progress is in general conformance with project drawings and specifications.
- Respond to Requests for Information as required over the course of the project.
- Perform site coordination and contract administration.
- Assist and liaise with construction coordinators, project managers and project stakeholders.
- Attend site meetings, review site work, prepare change orders and make any required changes to construction documents.
- Participate in health and safety start-up and lead commissioning activities to ensure optimum system safety and performance.
- Create deficiency lists and work with project team to ensure work is completed to quality expected.
- Troubleshoot deficiencies during the commissioning and start up processes.
- Communicate progress to clients and stakeholders.
- Assist technologists of other disciplines as required.
- Assist with document management, product library, maintaining, and disseminating industry standard and code information.
- Stay current on construction materials, equipment and methods, advise on standards and any revisions to keep pace with state-of-the-art technologies.
- Assist in forecasting remedial work for capital budgeting.
- Updating University Design Standards regularly.
- Other Duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Minimum of a three (3)-year Community College Diploma in a related discipline
- Minimum of three (3) years of relevant job experience
- C.E.T. certification is required
- Mechanical technical expertise
- Superior communication, tact and judgment skills
- Exceptional creativity and problem-solving skills
- Strong time management skills and the ability to effectively prioritize tasks when working on multiple complex projects at once
- Proficiency with AutoCAD and Bluebeam
- Familiarity with construction materials and mechanical equipment
- Sound knowledge of applicable codes and standards including but not limited to ASHRAE, OBC, Ontario Fire Code, TSSA, CSA, OSHA and AODA
