General Purpose

The Animal Health Laboratory (AHL) provides fully accredited veterinary diagnostic services supporting provincial animal disease diagnosis and surveillance. Through advanced technology and scientific expertise, AHL delivers the highest standard of testing and is a laboratory partner of choice for governments and universities across Canada in animal health and agriculture.

Duties and Responsibilities

Working in a fast‑paced laboratory environment, the Scientist will support diagnostic and development activities within the AHL Virology Section at the University of Guelph by:

  • Developing, verifying, validating, and implementing molecular and next-generation sequencing assays and instrumentation through hands-on laboratory bench work and troubleshooting.
  • Leading the adoption and implementation of bioinformatics software for large-scale data analysis.
  • Serving as a technical resource during the implementation and transition of new assays and technologies.
  • Conducting literature reviews to support continuous improvement initiatives and research and development activities.
  • Performing a broad range of molecular analyses using established laboratory methods.
  • Generating accurate, reliable, and timely analytical results and reports to support diagnostic testing.
  • Maintaining quality control and quality assurance documentation in accordance with laboratory protocols and accreditation requirements (ISO 17025, AAVLD, SCC).

 

Requirements

  • M.Sc. in a relevant scientific discipline, combined with several years of experience in a molecular diagnostics laboratory, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 2-3 years demonstrated experience with molecular assay and next-generation sequencing development and validation.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret scientific and technical data and conduct bioinformatics analyses on large-scale data sets.
  • Working knowledge of laboratory QA/QC systems and accreditation standards (ISO 17025, AAVLD, SCC).
  • Proven ability to multitask, adapt to changing priorities, and work productively in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Experience operating automated laboratory equipment and computer‑based laboratory systems.
  • Understanding of Occupational Health & Safety Act and WHMIS regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain an efficient, collaborative, and client‑focused work environment.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and adoption of new laboratory techniques, instrumentation, and procedures.

The target hiring salary for this position is minimum and up to 96% of midpoint for the salary grade.
