General Purpose

Reporting to the Manager, Office of Student Accountability (OSA), the Student Accountability Advisor is responsible for promoting a positive and safe campus environment through a timely response to instances of non-academic misconduct and disruptive student behaviour on campus. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities

The Advisor is the first point of contact for students navigating the policy on non-academic misconduct (Student Rights and Responsibilities Policy) and related policies. They are responsible for receiving complaints under the policy and determining appropriate resolution pathways.  This includes intake and preliminary assessments, investigations and making findings of responsibility and determining outcomes alongside students and/or assigning outcomes using principles of natural justice and procedural fairness. Where needed, they will appropriately refer high-risk cases to the designated authority. The Advisor will use student development theories and restorative practices to build and facilitate educational outcomes in accordance with the policy.

 

The incumbent responds to inquiries in a professional and timely manner using trauma-informed practices, empathy and cultural sensitivity. They will provide support and advice to students in navigating various campus systems to ensure appropriate referrals.  The Advisor will support the Student Support and Response Team (SSART) as needed.

 

The Advisor is responsible for accurate case record management in accordance with institutional record retention policies and all regulatory policies (e.g., FIPPA). They will support data collection and report generation to contribute to operational reporting requirements within the department. The Advisor will also represent the unit on institutional committees and initiatives and liaise regularly with campus partners to promote unit services, and collaboration on new educational outcomes.

 

Requirements

  • A Master’s Degree coupled with 2 years progressive experience in student affairs, higher education, or related field.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and practice of principles of Indigenization, equity, diversity, inclusion, accessibility, and anti-racism.
  • Experience supporting a student code of conduct process.
  • Experience managing complex decision making and difficult situations.
  • Proven ability to exercise a high level of judgment, diplomacy, and tact, and manage high-risk and complex situations.
  • Proven ability to respect and maintain confidentiality in sensitive and/or volatile situations.
  • Knowledge of principles of procedural fairness, natural justice, current and emerging trends in higher education student behaviour management, and the application of student development theory to student learning and support.
  • Experience with case management standards and best practices, with strong administrative and organization skills.
  • Demonstrated excellent human relations, and advising skills, especially the ability to empathize, and communicate effectively in intercultural, and postsecondary settings. 
  • Training in risk assessment, and/or non-violent crisis intervention.
  • Training in any of the following would be considered an asset:
    • Restorative justice, mediation, dispute resolution,
    • Behaviour Intervention Teams and / or Care teams,
    • Gender-based violence, mental health, trauma informed approaches, neurodiversity, and
    • Case management with at-risk populations.

The target hiring salary for this position is minimum and up to 96% of midpoint for the salary grade.
