General Purpose

The Department of Chemistry is a central academic unit within the College of Computational, Mathematical, and Physical Sciences and consists of 20 faculty, 14 regular full time staff (10 USW and 4 P&M), seceral temporary/contract staff, 4-10 sessional appointments per year, over 65 graduate students, over 100 TAs (CUPE), 10-15 Postdoctoral Scholars and research associates, as well as 10-20 undergraduate research assistants and/or CO-op students throughout the year. Additionally, the department has ~500 undergraduate majors and annually teaches over 6000 first-year students. As a major component to its academic mission, the department offers extensive course-based in-person laboratory training to undergraduate students at all levels, and maintains extensive related physical operations, including teaching laboratory spaces with high-value scientific equipment.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Chemistry, the Teaching Lab Manager has managerial responsibility for maximizing the pedagogical excellence, efficiency, and safety of all undergraduate teaching lab endeavours.

 

The incumbent of this position is expected to operate with minimal supervision, to oversee operations of all undergraduate teaching labs in the Department of Chemistry, including acting as the direct supervisor of 4-5 USW staff members, creating new lab experiments and lab courses, and instructing 2 x 0.5 credit lab or lecture courses per year. To do so, the incumbent must have expertise across all subdisciplines of chemistry and extensive familiarity with chemical equipment and instrumentation. The incumbent must have significant experience coordinating undergraduate chemistry labs, training lab personnel, and meeting environmental and safety requirements in chemistry teaching labs. The incumbent must continually upgrade their skills and knowledge to remain professionally current with new pedagogical and safety developments.

 

Requirements

  • PhD in Chemistry plus 3 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Relevant experience in laboratory management and instructional delivery;
  • Experience supporting laboratory operations and teaching academic courses;
  • Highly experienced with pedagogical aspects of hands-on chemistry education;
  • Highly experienced with the use and maintenance of high-valve scientific instruments;
  • Expertise across all subdisciplines of chemistry at a minimum B.Sc. level;
  • Experience with lecture design and delivery;
  • Experience with assessment design and implementation;
  • Proficiency with standard office software, including Microsoft OS, Word, & Excel;
  • Understanding of the chemical safety and regulations, including SDS;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships;
  • Ability to demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving skills;
  • Excellent organizational skills including multitasking, planning and prioritization;
  • Relevant experience in staff management and a solid grasp of HR policies would be advantageous for this position;
  • Familiarity with AODA and understanding of digital security and privacy issues would be considered an asset.

The target hiring salary for this position is minimum and up to 96% of midpoint for the salary grade.
