Duties and Responsibilities

The University of Guelph, Ridgetown Campus invites applications for temporary part-time Lab Assistants, to support course delivery in the Veterinary Technology Associate Diploma program and the Veterinary Assistant and Office Administration Certificate program. The appointments will begin in September 2026 and will end in December 2026. The positions are based at the Ridgetown Campus, in the municipality of Chatham-Kent, 200km southwest of the University’s main campus in Guelph.

 

Reporting to the Associate Director of Academic Quality and Student Success, Lab Assistants are responsible for attending course labs, delivering and setting up laboratory material provided by the instructor(s) and for providing student support.

DVT*2320 Surgical Exercises

This course deals with the practical and theoretical application of anaesthetic and surgical techniques to animals. Students will be expected to apply the rationale behind the possible complications with each surgery, thus enabling them to be involved in client education. During the laboratory sessions, students work in small groups becoming proficient in delivering anaesthesia to animals, performing surgical assistance with aseptic instrument handling with the veterinarian, and practice surgical nursing, and post-operative care to the patient. Students will develop skills such as proper placement and care of an intravenous indwelling catheter for anesthetized animals, collection of patient blood to perform a pre-surgical serum chemistry profile along with applying the theoretical principles of anesthesia.

 

DVT*3320 Veterinary Parasitology

  • Wednesday 2:00pm-4:00pm
  • Thursday 1:00pm-3:00pm, 3:00pm-5:00pm

 

This course emphasizes practical laboratory techniques utilized routinely in veterinary practice regarding various animal parasites. The course familiarizes students with common internal and external parasites of veterinary significance in Canada. Topics of discussion will include: parasite location, methods of infection, parasite development and behaviour, clinical signs of disease, pharmaceutical treatment and prevention, diagnosis and potential human health hazards or zoonoses.

 

CVOA*1200  Clinical Exercises I 

  • Tuesday 3:00pm-5:00pm

 

Following a pre-lab lecture and demonstration, students have the opportunity for hands on experience during laboratory sessions. Labs will include: equine handling, restraint and grooming; bovine handling and restraint; canine and feline handling, restraint and medicating.

Requirements

  • Must be a Registered Veterinary Technician in good standing.
  • Must have two-year Veterinary Technology diploma or relevant lab experience.
  • Must have one year of clinical experience working as a Registered Veterinary Technician.
  • Strong communication skills are required.
